Challenge Battles (チャレンジバトル, Charenjibatoru)? are an alternate game mode of combat introduced in Persona 5 Royal.

Challenge Battles are generally a series of battles Caroline and Justine host in order to test the protagonist's skill, and can be done at any time when the protagonist is in the Velvet Room and talks to the twins.
The objective of the game is to gain as many points as possible by defeating enemies, using mechanics, and completing the battle as fast as possible.
The mode also appears in Persona 5: The Phantom X, where the protagonist may participate in them by consulting Merope.
Conduct[]
There are 13 Challenge Battles unlocked in the game, 5 of which are several Trials that gradually scale by Level, and the remaining 8 are only available as DLC. The DLC battles follow different win criteria and challenges, including battles against the protagonists of Persona 3 and Persona 4.
If a battle drags on for too long, enemy Shadows will start using Megidolaon to inflict severe Almighty damage to the party to wipe them out. The skill can be used even if the Shadow has run out of SP or is afflicted with Forget, although other ailments can still disrupt their actions.
The party can always make a successful escape if commanded.
The following abilities and mechanics are disabled in Challenge Battles:
- Hold Up (along with All-out Attack and Negotiation)
- Showtime
- Follow Up
- Pickpocket
- Moral Support/Active Support
Against Persona users[]
Unlike other modes, the battles against the protagonists of Persona 3 and Persona 4 are not serial, but consist of a battle against one opponent wielding multiple Personas.
The enemy Persona users in these battles are innately immune to Burn, Confuse, Brainwash, Fear, Despair ailments and Insta-Kill attacks, and can always dodge God's Judgment and Hell's Judgment. They can still use Magic skills even when drained out of SP.
Scoring[]
The protagonist's score is determined by the amount of damage he and his team deal to enemies, which is then multiplied by the specified modifiers for each battle. For multi-target and Multi-hit attacks, as well as Ranged Attacks, points are registered with each hit and each damaged enemy, but are capped at 999,999. Furthermore, the UI can only display up to ten score registrations at a time. Any additional hits beyond the tenth registration will be accumulated into that tenth registration.
Burn damage, reflected damage, damage from Brainwashed combatants, and deaths caused by Despair give no points, although an exploding Disaster Shadow damaging other Shadows is considered an attack from the protagonist's side and does generate points. Enemies withdrawing in Fear are not considered killed and grant no points.
Eliminating an enemy Shadow using Insta-Kill gives points equal to that Shadow's max HP specifically, rather than its remaining HP. This is also applied for Door of Hades if it successfully insta-kills the targets, ignoring the actual damage it inflicts on them.
Result and rewards[]
Each battle has several rewards, which are treasure items that can be exchanged for money, Skill Cards (almost always, with several exceptions) and skill accessories.
After a Challenge Battle, HP and SP of the party are restored to how they were before, but any consumable items used in the battle are permanently lost. Neither the battles themselves nor the Treasure Demons encountered in them generate EXP or money, but the items and money confiscated from Confused Shadows are kept afterwards. The death of the protagonist in a Challenge Battle does not result in a Game Over, as he is simply returned to the Velvet Room.

For the 2nd battle, inflict sleep to all enemies, use Ziodyne on Valkyrie, Baton Pass to Protagonist, technical hit to Odin, Baton Pass to Ann, technical hit on the last enemy and pass to Makoto and use Mafreidyne to kill them all. On the last battle, use Demonic Decree twice, use Ziodyne, pass to Ann, use Stun Gun to inflict Shock, and have Makoto use God's Hand.

- Tips: Prepare a handful of Stun Gun and/or Shock Magatama. Get Ariadne with Beast Weaver on the protagonist; Ryuki equipped with Ring of Pride, Haru with God's Hand Belt, and either Makoto or Akechi with Ring of Lust. After the protagonist inflicts Shock, let Ryuji charge Haru with Tyrant's Will before she uses God's Hand for the three bonuses (Haru's attack may occasionally become an unwanted Critical, as it negates the Technical bonus and deals less damage than a Rank-2 Technical hit). The forth party member can either Debilitate the enemy or uses Champion's Cup to replenish Haru's HP and gives her an ATK buff. Once the foe's HP is low enough, give the protagonist a Baton Pass and use Beast Weaver, which is the strongest Physical skill in-game, to wrap up the battle and take full advantage of the takedown bonus.

- In the first round of Survival (Level 50), Alice is fought with Belial and Nebiros, a reference to Shin Megami Tensei where she was cared for by Count Red (Belial) and Count Black (Nebiros) which was also referenced to in several other games of the Megami Tensei franchise.
- In the third round of Trickster (Level 50), the party fights Parvati, Arahabaki, Pixie and Cu Chulainn together. They are four of the six enemies the Demi-fiend summons in his ultimate boss fight in Digital Devil Saga: Avatar Tuner.
- Additionally, Pixie is able to use Megidolaon, referencing a common trend of games having special and powerful Pixies that can use Megidolaon such as Shin Megami Tensei III: Nocturne, Elizabeth's Pixie in Persona 3, Digital Devil Saga: Avatar Tuner, and a few others.
