Chain mail is a type of armor consisting of small metal rings linked together in a pattern to form a mesh. The earliest examples of chain mail date back to as early as the 3rd century BC, and remained in common use until being gradually replaced by plate armor in the 16th century AD. Its strength and durability is determined by the type of metal used to make the rings, the way the rings are linked, how densely the rings are linked, and the thickness of the rings. Mail was also used as underlying layers for plate armor and helms.
