Célestine Galli-Marié (1837 – 1905) was a French mezzo-soprano who was most famous for her role of Carmen. Despite being the third choice to play the role of Carmen, Célestine proved to be a vital player in maintaining the play's tone for the composer Georges Bizet as she supported his resistance to the management demanding that he tone down the play. Célestine's vocal tone was so distinct, her last name "Galli-Marié" is often used to classify vocalists who sing in the light mezzo-soprano range.
The back of her jacket reads Libre elle est née et libre elle mourra, a lyric sung by Carmen from the duet song C'est toi? C'est moi? in the climax scene of Carmen. It is this song that she exclaims that she refuses to be bound to any man, but is killed by her spurned ex-lover José in doing so. The phrase translates to "free she was born, free she will die."
"A beautiful actress who performed as Carmen in the opera named for the role. So tempestuous and outspoken was she that it's said the main role was rewritten to better suit her."
