Combatants inflicted with Brainwash ignore commands and either attack their allies or support the enemy faction with Support and Healing skills they have on their arsenal. If the protagonist is brainwashed, he will not switch his Persona. A brainwashed combatant attacking and knocking down an ally will get a One More as usual, although the normal UI visual effect for One More would not be played. Brainwash has an expiration timer of 1 and thus will expire at the start of the combatant's second turn.
Combatants inflicted with Brainwash are vulnerable to Technical damage from Psychic skills.
In Persona 5 Royal, if a combatant simultaneously Downs an enemy and gets Brainwashed (e.g. from a reflected Brain Buster), they will still get a One More but the combatant is subject to Brainwashed behaviors. However, due to a glitch, if this attack happens after a Baton Pass, the combatant will be able to act freely during the One More even while being Brainwashed. In either case, an irregular Hold Up will be initiated if all enemies are Downed after this.
In Persona 5 Royal, if Knowing the Heart has been read, brainwashed enemies are also vulnerable to Technical damage from Bless skills.
If brainwashed Shadows are negotiated with, there will be special dialogue available for the protagonist.
Jealousy is a weaker version of Brainwash that forces the target into attacking another party member that used a support skill on a party member other than themselves.

- According to the internal files of Persona 5, it's very likely that Brainwash was added later in development, as a certain item, which was the equivalent of Energy Drop, could only cure "Confuse/Fear/Rage/Despair", with no mention of Brainwash.
