Battle Drops are items received from defeating enemies in battle.
Overview[]
When an enemy is defeated in battle, the party has a chance to receive an item. The item that can be received is assigned to the demon at hand. For example, in Shin Megami Tensei, Jack Frost can only drop "Mabufu Stone" upon being defeated.
The property of dropping items is generally exclusive to encounters, and bosses and mini-bosses generally don't drop anything. Although, there are numerous encounter enemies that yield nothing as well.
Shin Megami Tensei V[]
Demon encounters normally have the chance to drop 3 different items after being defeated in battle. One is almost always a Life Stone, and another consists of the demon's respective Essence. The third item is specific to the demon at hand, and is normally a consumable item, with some encounters either dropping a relic item or a key item related to a quest. There are exceptions to this pattern: Fafnir and Yamata no Orochi do not drop Life Stones, whereas Slime doesn't have a third item drop, but rather just Life Stones and its Essence.
Bosses and mini-bosses always drop the listed items upon being defeated. There's no pattern in what items they drop: they can either drop the same item twice, or not drop anything at all.
Persona 5 / Royal[]
In Persona 5, Shadow encounters can only drop material items (with the exception of the Reaper, who drops a Divine Pillar, an accessory,) although in Persona 5 Royal, some enemies may instead drop sooty armor. On principle, Shadows in the Depths of Mementos and the Qliphoth World do not drop any items after being slain, with the exception of Abaddon in Royal, who drops a Sooty Gilded Collar. In Persona 5 Royal, certain enemies do not drop anything when slain in general.
