Bael (バエル, Baeru) is a recurring demon in the series.
Bael originally appeared as the apparent spiritual leader of Tokyo and serves as boss of the first half of Megami Tensei II before the game's overworld focus becomes Makai.
History
According to Goetia, Bael is the First Principal Spirit who rules as king of the East. He has command of over 66 legions of demons, who he speaks to with a hoarse voice. His appearance varies, although the most common is a three-headed apparition, with the heads being a cat, a man and a toad. He is able to make his conjurer invisible. Kaneko's Shin Megami Tensei design for Bael is identical to Louis Breton and M. Jarrault's illustration published in the Dictionnaire Infernal Demonographia.

The friend refuses to believe this, however, and leaves the hero. The witch the joins him in his place. Later on, after going through Zaratan Island, the hero arrives at Bael's Castle, where the friend, now known as the Dark Hero, has infiltrated.
