Baalzephon is a demon in the series.
History[edit | edit source]
Baal Saphon (Zephon) was a title of the Ugaritic god Hadad, related to the belief that Mount Hermon (known as Saphon in Ugarit) was his sacred site. Prayers frequently invoked Baal to send divine aid from the summit of Mount Saphon. As a weather god he was popular among sailors, who believed he could pacify the forces of nature and guarantee them a safe journey back home. As a result he was indirectly viewed as a tutelary god of maritime trade. His worship continued later in various Phoenician cities such as Tyre, Sidon and Carthage.
Other gods were also associated with Mount Saphon. In Hittite and Hurrian mythology, Teshub (or Tarhunna; a storm god and equivalent of Hadad) battled the stone giant Ullikummi, who grew on the shoulder of Ubelluris, near Mount Hazzi - the Hittite name of Mount Saphon. Addtitionally in some versions of the Epic of Gilgamesh it was the location of Humbaba's grove.
Due to popularity of Baal Saphon, many places were named after him. One such location is mentioned in the Book of Exodus as a place where YHVH instructed the Israelites to hide to save them from the Pharaoh.
