Arvid Svendel Grius, who goes more commonly by his surname Grius, is a temporary playable character in Metaphor: ReFantazio. A member of the rhoag tribe, he is a master of both martial arts and magic, and even attempted awakening to the Archetypes. He is the father of Maria Alces.

Profile[]
Prior to the events of the game, Grius was the prince's tutor in swordplay. He directly attempted to protect the prince on the night where he was targeted for assassination alongside Eiselin Hulkenberg but had failed. As such, Grius joined the Resistance in the Ancient Eldan Sanctum that was formed to conceal the prince in a hiding place and restore his position of power. Much like the majority of the kingdom, he believed that Louis Guiabern was the assassin who cursed the prince, but the true culprits of the assassination are only known to a handful of people who were directly involved in its planning.
Grius is also the father of Maria, and had a romantic relationship with an ishkia in the past as implied by Maria's halfblood heritage, but this came to a tragic end, as Maria later tearfully implied during her Rank 3 Follower event that Mrs. Grius née Alces had succumbed from an undisclosed illness while she was younger. Eventually, he gets re-married with Fabienne Lagopus Vulpes. Due to complicated circumstances involving Grius and travel, Fabienne is willing to take over the Hushed Honeybee Inn for him.
Summary[]
During the beginning of the story, Grius acts as an operative under his surname, with Will and Gallica have been assigned to relay a confidential message to him. After finding him in the Northern Border Fort after killing the human Homo Gorleo, he's told his mission has been changed to directly assassinate the supposed perpetrator of the prince's assassination to free him of his curse, who he identifies as Louis and Will accepts gladly. Together with Strohl, the quartet begins working in secret, though he was initially wary of Strohl until the ex-lordling awakened to his Archetype, the Warrior.
After returning back to the Royal Capital Grand Trad at the Hushed Honeybee Inn, Grius is re-introduced as Maria's father and the current husband of Fabienne. Grius asks the others to keep Maria company. On the day of the funeral, with Strohl and Will's help, they give him an opening for him to assassinate Louis, but due to Hythlodaeus V's election magic protecting the most popular candidates from being killed by others, the magic reacted by chaining Grius in midair before he could plunge his knife into Louis' exposed back. In retaliation, Louis fatally slashed Grius' throat with his sword, spilling Grius' blood on the royal casket. His body would later be taken by the guards that Grius would, under Hulkenberg's command, to be buried at the mausoleum. Should the protagonist return to Akademeia afterwards, More will mournfully note that all the magla spent on Grius for Archetype customization had been returned to the protagonist.
Any postmortem respect and dignity were stripped from him as Grius' corpse would later be reanimated by the Zorba when the party tried cutting through the mausoleum for the first time to get into the Regalith Grand Cathedral and attacked them as Undead Grius. Hulkenberg would awaken to her Archetype, the Knight, upon hearing that her prince still lives, and the party would do battle with Grius, eventually defeating the risen corpse. Before passing on once more, Grius entrusted both the prince's fate and Maria's into their hands, with the party obtaining Grius's Memento after the fight.

- Grius' death is foreshadowed by the fact that of the first three playable characters, he was the only one to not have an innate Archetype and had to have his ability to use Archetypes be unlocked for him in Akademia, as well as the fact he didn't form a Follower Bond with the protagonist.
- Although his death occurred before the announcement of the Tournament for the Throne, he still represented the rhoag tribe as a member of Will's party and their shared goal in saving the prince, technically completing the protagonist's list of close allies he traveled with on his journey each being from the eight other tribes aside from the elda tribe.
- Grius has unused voicelines pertaining to useage of Archetypes beyond the three (Seeker, Warrior, Mage) that he had access to until his death.
- Despite being an undead corpse, Undead Grius as an enemy has the person race instead of the undead race.
