Arqa.

Arqa (奇顔の庭アルカ, Kigao no niwa Aruka)^?, Garden of the Visages, is the second block of Tartarus in Persona 3, which is divided into two sections.

Arqa first becomes available for exploration on May 10th, after the protagonist defeats the Arcana Priestess. However, unlike its predecessor the Thebel Block, it is divided into two sections and the second is unlocked on June 13th, after the Arcana Empress and Arcana Emperor are defeated.

In total, Arqa has 48 floors that go from 17F to 64F (69 in Persona 3 Reload). The division between the two sections can be found on 40F. The preset floors are 25F, 36F, 47F and 59F.

Visually, it features a darker design than Thebel, with stone castle wall designs and chitinous materials lining the floor and an occasional face on the wall. The floors feature a repeating skull design with inverted patterns in places.

In Reload, Arqa has undergone a slight redesign. It is almost entirely purple with glowing features, and additionally contains large, moving tentacles all throughout the block. Compared to other floors, it contains much more natural generation that does not conform to the traditional grid-like layouts, more closely resembling caves than the man-made setpieces featured in the rest of Tartarus.

It is during this block that Mitsuru Kirijo reaches her limit as a navigator, as Penthesilea is more suited to combat than navigation. Partway up the first half of the block, communications begin to break up, and they become almost completely garbled during the mission to rescue Fuuka Yamagishi. After Fuuka is recruited, she replaces Mitsuru as navigator since Lucia specializes in navigation abilities and has a far larger communication range.

The music that plays in the Arqa Block is similar to the one that plays in the Thebel Block, but has a louder synth percussion.

In Persona 3 Portable and Persona 3 Reload, people from Tatsumi Port Island can wander into Tartarus during the Dark Hour. When someone wanders into Tartarus, Elizabeth / Theodore will inform both protagonists that someone is currently in Tartarus.

When the protagonist successfully rescues the victims, they will be rewarded the next day if they talk to Officer Kurosawa at the Police Station.

Etymology

"Arqa" (Hebrew: אַרְקָא) is an archaic Hebrew word meaning "land" or "ground," appearing in Sefer HaZohar as one of the names for the world. It is also the name of the third world created in Kabbalah tradition.
