This topic is in need of research for the following reason:
* Should battle conditions (such as shields and attack charges) count as "status conditions"?

This can be discussed on the article's talk page.

Ailments (状態異常, Joutai ijou)?, also known as status effects, are conditions that affects a character or demon during battle. These effects are mostly negative, and while many are volatile and wear off at the end of battle, some will persist while exploring field areas. Some demons are naturally resistant to status effects, either to the associated skill type or to ailments in general (Anti-Ailment).

Some skills, such as Eternal Rest, will cause instant death to targets under a specific ailment. The exact effect of a status condition can vary between games.

Recurring[]

A list of status effects that appeared in almost all titles in the series:

Name Effect
Freeze In earlier games, Freeze prevents any action in battle and wears off after one turn. In later games, attacking a frozen enemy is guaranteed to cause a critical hit. Usually caused by Ice skills.
Shock In earlier games, Shock prevents any action in battle and wears off after one turn. In later games, attacking a shocked enemy is guaranteed to cause a critical hit. Usually caused by Electricity skills.
Poison Depletes health at the end of each turn, often persisting on the field. Typically removed by Posumudi or Dis-Poison.
Paralyze Paralyzed characters are unable to move. Unlike Shock, this often persists for more than one turn. Typically removed by Paraladi or Dis-Paralyze.
Stun Stunned characters have lowered agility and defense. Typically removed by Paraladi or Dis-Stun.
Mute Prevents use of Magic. Typically removed by Mutudi or Dis-Mute.
Confused Confused characters become indecisive and may either attack a random enemy, do nothing or flee in a panic.
Charm Character begins attacking their own allies or cast healing spells on the enemies. Typically removed with Charmdi or Dis-Charm.
Stone Prevents the target from moving. This persists even on the field and is treated as similar to being dead. In most games, if the protagonist is petrified, it triggers a game over. In some games, Force spells will shatter a petrified opponent.
Sleep Prevents any action in battle. Character loses a turn. In some games, sleeping characters restore some of their HP and MP.
Death Can no longer participate in battle. In most games, if the protagonist dies, it is game over. Can only be recovered with Recarm spells.

Uncommon[]

A list of status effects that appeared in some titles in the series:

In Persona Q and Persona Q2, Binds are spilt into three different subsets that stop specific actions.

Shin Megami Tensei IV
Shin Megami Tensei IV: Apocalypse
Persona Q
Persona Q2

Shin Megami Tensei: Strange Journey
Devil Children series
Burn Similarly to Poison, Burn inflicts damage to the afflicted after they take their turn (or at intervals in Persona 5 Strikers). This includes actions from One Mores or additional actions. Persona 5/Royal

In the Persona series and Metaphor:ReFantazio, Rage lowers the afflicted's defense and agility. In Metaphor, the opponent will not attack their allies and will only use physical attacks. Shin Megami Tensei: Strange Journey

Persona 4
Persona 5
Metaphor:ReFantazio
Down Character may get their turn skipped and they take more damage. Overlaps with other ailments. Persona 3

Hungry Hungry characters will become indecisive. On their turn, they will either not take action and receive a small amount of Almighty damage or attack an ally. In Avatar Tuner, only curable by the Song of Grace. DDS: Avatar Tuner
Persona 5
Frightened/Anxiety In DDS, Frightened makes the afflicted more susceptible to Hunt Skills. In Metaphor:ReFantazio, characters will use Archetype skills at random if the command is selected, and enemies that attack them will not consume any turn icons. Digital Devil Saga series
Metaphor:ReFantazio

Game Specific[]

Shin Megami Tensei & Shin Megami Tensei II[]

Name Effect
Curse Afflicted character takes damage every time you take a step (1 damage every 2 steps) and cannot use magic out of combat. Seems to have no effect in combat. Can only be cured by Healers.

Shin Megami Tensei NINE[]

Name Effect
Sick Capacity is doubled

Shin Megami Tensei III: Nocturne[]

Name Effect
Fly Renders the target 200% vulnerable to all affinities and reduces all their stats except Ag to 1. Only inflicted by Baal Avatar's Bael's Bane ability. Wears off after battle. Curse-type and can be immuned.
Cursed Target may waste a turn doing nothing or attacking allies. Also changes the fusion chart while inflicted. Inflicted by a restless Magatama and exclusive to the Demi-fiend.

Shin Megami Tensei IV[]

Name Effect
Sick Reduces affected character's outgoing damage by 25%, its evasion to 0 and increases damage taken by 25%. At the end of a turn with a party holding this character, there's a 5% chance that another character will be infected. Can be cured with Dis-Poison or Posumudi skill.
Lost Flynn cannot summon or fuse the affected demon and is forced to reunite with said demon through an encounter.
Brand DLC only. Reduces HP and MP recovery to 1 point. Can't be cured, but wears off randomly or automatically after battle.

Shin Megami Tensei IV: Apocalypse[]

Name Effect
Sick Reduces affected character's outgoing damage by 25%, its evasion to 0 and increases damage taken by 25%. At the end of the party's turn or an individual party member's turn, if a party member is afflicted, there is a 5% chance that another party member will be infected. Can be cured with a Dis-Poison, an Amrita Soda/Amrita Shower, the Posumudi skill, or the Amrita skill. Can also be cured via level-up after obtaining the Level Heal app.
Lost Nanashi cannot summon or fuse the affected demon and is forced to reunite with said demon through an encounter. Alternatively, Hallelujah's passive ability Lost Catcher will prevent Lost 100% of the time if he is Nanashi's active partner.
Brand Reduces HP and MP recovery to 1 point. Can't be cured, but wears off randomly or automatically after battle.

Majin Tensei II: Spiral Nemesis[]

Name Effect

Puppet Allows controlling a K.O-ed ally.
Puppet can attack and use items, but cannot summon Persona.
Beast Buffs all stats. Amount varies depending on the current moon phase.

Persona 2[]

Name Effect

Possession Some demons can inflict Possession, K.O-ing themselves in the process. An ally inflicted with possession has a chance of using the demon's spells or basic physical attack instead of following commands. This can prevent them from partaking in Fusion Spells.
Holy Lance Prevents summoning, changing and using Personas. The Order of the Holy Lance can inflict it for up to two turns, while the Fuhrer can inflict it indefinitely. The Spirit Rib item has a 50% chance of curing it and has infinite uses.

Digital Devil Saga: Avatar Tuner[]

Name Effect
Ache After a successful hunt, the character that just ate might get affected by a stomach ache. Occasionally inflicted as a side effect from eating a Moldy Roll. This prevents the character from gaining any AP after the battle. Allies also won't get any AP from the consumed monster, if AP sharing skills are set. Cured by Dis-Ache and Achedi and prevented from infliction via successful hunt by Iron Stomach.
Bat Reduces all stats and makes the affected character weak to Force. Wears off over time or when battle ends. Does not override passive skills that affect Force resistance.

Devil Survivor[]

Egg When the team holding the affected character has their next turn, the affected character takes a large amount of Almighty damage and a Maggot is summoned next to them. Only inflicted by Belzeboul and his minions' Spawn attack.

Frostbite The affected character's attack is greatly reduced.
