"The mysterious female pope of the Middle Ages. She posed as a man and eventually made it all the way up to pope due to her unrivaled intellect. Her existence shook the history of the Catholic church."
—Persona 5 compendium (Johanna)
Agnes is one of the alternate names given to Pope Joan. She was a legendary Medieval woman who, according to the 13th century manuscript Chronica Universalis Mettensis, reigned as pope for a short period until she collapsed while pregnant and her deception was exposed. While references to a female pope go back to the 12th century, modern historians consider Pope Joan to be a fictional creation meant to discredit the church.
