Agnes is one of the alternate names given to Pope Joan, or Johanna. She was a legendary Medieval woman who, according to the 13th century manuscript Chronica Universalis Mettensis, reigned as pope for a short period until she collapsed while pregnant and her deception was exposed. While references to a female pope go back to the 12th century, modern historians consider Pope Joan to be a fictional creation meant to discredit the church.
"Another name of Johanna, the female pope of the middle ages. Posing as a man, her wits and ability helped her climb the ranks. Her story shook the Catholic Church to its core."

Trivia[]
The initials B and J on the sides of Agnes are a reference to Boaz and Jachin, the two pillars that stood on the porch of Solomon's Temple. The pillars are depicted in several variants of the Priestess Arcana, such as the Rider–Waite Tarot deck. It is also speculated that the figure depicted in many variants of the Priestess Arcana was based on Pope Joan, the namesake and basis of Agnes.
